The post today will bring our Dungeonborne Beginner’s Guide with an introduction to the game focusing on what each of the classes does and also on some other aspects of the game like the NPCs responsible for forging, potion making, and trading in the game.
Introduction to the World of Dungeonborne
The game world takes place inside dungeons filled with monsters: giant bugs, rats over 2 meters tall, ghosts, skeletons, armor that moves on its own, and much more. Your goal is to venture through the dungeons, finding items and being careful not to be killed by other explorers during your adventure.
Character Creation
You start the game on the character creation screen. There are 7 classes and 2 races available during the open beta of the game, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. It’s ideal to play with the one you like the most at the moment because we still don’t know what the meta is, so the ideal is to have fun. However, note that the Cryomancer and the Death Knight, which are the 2 undead classes, can only be played after 2 and 3 days of entering the game.
Each Class has its Weapons and Armor that can be used, so not all equipment you find on the map may be used by your character.
You will have the option to choose the Class, Ability, and a Passive Ability. Below we will give a brief summary of each class in the game.
Classes
Fighter
Their strengths include great resilience, effective close combat abilities, and the ability to use a variety of weapons. However, their main disadvantage is slow movement speed.
Preferred weapons for Fighters include one-handed swords, two-handed swords, daggers, one-handed maces, shields, and crossbows.
They have abilities like “Whirlwind”, where they spin the equipped weapon to hit multiple enemies around them while moving, and “Rush”, which allows them to quickly advance in a fast attack.
Priest
The strengths of the Priest include their ability to heal allies and provide beneficial buffs to the group. However, they have low damage output and are weak in prolonged close combat.
Preferred weapons for Priests are one-handed maces, shields, and scepters.
Among the Priest’s abilities are “Divine Guidance”, which heals a targeted ally or the user themselves, with increased effectiveness with continuous use, and “Divine Protection”, which applies a shield to the user and grants moderate movement speed.
Rogue
Among the Rogue’s strengths are their high base movement speed, quick interaction speed with doors, and high looting speed. Additionally, they have the ability to become invisible, which helps them strategically position themselves and attack with an advantage.
However, the Rogue is vulnerable and struggles in prolonged close combat.
Preferred weapons for the Rogue include one-handed swords, daggers, and crossbows.
Their abilities include “Petrifying Poison”, which coats the weapon with poison, causing Petrify on the next successful attack, and “Vanish”, which makes them stealthy for 15 seconds, ensuring critical strikes during that period.
Blademaster
Their strengths include strong explosive ranged damage and effective abilities to keep enemies at bay. Additionally, they perform well in close combat when necessary.
However, the Blademaster is highly dependent on their abilities and resource-intensive, which may require careful management during combat.
Weapons of choice for the Blademaster include one-handed swords, two-handed swords, shields, and crossbows.
Among their abilities are “Psionic Blades”, which summons psionic swords to shoot at enemies and restore a bit of life, and “Whirling Blade”, which summons a psionic sword to orbit around the Blademaster, causing damage to nearby enemies.
Pyromancer
The advantages of the Pyromancer include their explosive ranged damage, their ability to cause area damage, and their specialization in magical weapons. However, they have a slow base movement speed and are quite dependent on good positioning during combat.
Weapons of choice for the Pyromancer include one-handed swords, staffs, and shields.
Among their abilities are “Pyroblast”, which launches a flaming boulder causing fire damage to targets within range, with the possibility of increasing its effectiveness through channeling and absorbing fire sources around, and “Fire Blast”, which releases a flaming shockwave in a ring shape, pushing back nearby enemies and significantly reducing their speed for a short period.
Death Knight
Their advantages include the ability to initiate combat, cause area damage in close combat range, and be effective in close combat in general. However, they depend on soul energy for their abilities, have weak survival skills, and low sustainability during prolonged confrontations.
Weapons of choice for the Death Knight include one-handed swords, two-handed swords, shields, and crossbows.
Among their abilities are “Soul Shroud”, which summons a ring of profane power around themselves, causing recurring shadow damage to all nearby enemies during the duration, and “Grasp of the Grave”, which fires a spectral chain at the target, pulling them toward the Death Knight and causing shadow damage.
Cryomancer
The advantages of the Cryomancer include their crowd control in ranged area and robust survival skills. However, they require continuous spellcasting and have low explosive damage.
Weapons of choice for the Cryomancer include one-handed swords, staffs, and shields.
Among their abilities are “Ice Storm”, which summons a mobile and expansive storm that gradually freezes enemies within its range, and “Ice Barrier”, which wraps the Cryomancer in an ice barrier, making them immune to damage and regenerating their life over time.
Exploration and Combat
You start at a point in the dungeon and the game guides you to the center where the chance of finding other players increases and also to find the portals to exit the dungeon. While the game’s combat seems to be quite slow, some classes have faster attacks, but overall movements are slow, so if you pay attention to the opponent’s pattern, you can attack and retreat between attacks.
Equipment and Item Management
The game’s inventory is limited, so you need to manage well what to carry to maximize profit. Your character’s inventory has 60 spaces for items, and the inventory outside the dungeon has 170 spaces and more can be acquired with gold, for example, the second box to be acquired costs 5000 gold.
Blacksmith
The Blacksmith will be responsible for placing Gems into your equipment. You will notice that some of the equipment has slots that will allow you to insert the gems you find in your adventures, they will give unique bonuses to your character.
Alchemist
It’s the NPC that will help you make potions and items that will help you stay alive in the game, for example: life potions, bandages, strength potions, and so on.
Merchant
Basically, it’s the NPC where you can buy and sell your items to prepare for your explorations.
Trade
There is also a trading system where you can buy items from other players.
Missions and Objectives
The goal is to survive and bring the treasures back with you after exploration to be sold and then buy better armor, weapons, potions, and items. There are currently missions, but it’s not very detailed, just a list in the adventure tab for you to check before venturing out.
One thing missing from the game is a story behind what you are going through in the game, the game starts without telling you why you are there or anything like that, and it doesn’t seem like a Souls-like where you explore the world and find your purpose, so specifically, this was something I missed as it doesn’t give a sense of progress beyond getting items and killing players.
Survival Tips
When making successful explorations, keep good items you find along the way so that if you die and lose your current items, you can use the reserves when needed.
Choose wisely the items you will bring with you when returning, try to opt for the best and most expensive ones to make more profit from it.
Don’t hesitate to use life potions if you’re at half HP, use them right away because you don’t know if you’ll have time to use them.
Conclusion
The game seems to have a lot of potential, over time and with the progress of the developers, the game has everything to be successful but it’s not for everyone, currently in the beta, there are quite a few problems related to ping, so this may be one of the things to consider when taking the game more seriously and dying because of it.
